A few weeks ago there was a contest sponsored by Birds & Blooms Magazine and the Black Swamp Bird Observatory. It involved answering questions about the movie “The Big Year”, starring Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson. I entered and won one of the prize packages, which arrived on my doorstep today. Here’s a pic of some of the goodies:
There’s a tote bag, DVD of the movie and copy of the book it was based on, Kingbird Highway by Kenn Kaufman (a great book, by the way), “The Best of Birds & Blooms 2012” (lovely hardcover book with beautiful photos), a pair of promotional folding binoculars for the movie, and several small pins, stickers, keychains, pens, etc. The two ballcaps will probably go in Eric’s collection, but I might have to fight him for that blue one. Just look at the colors on this:
So why am I a two-time winner, you ask? Well, at tonight’s meeting of the local Audubon Society, I won this lovely robin print in a raffle. It’s very pretty, mounted on an artist’s canvas, and about 11 x 17″. I’ve been wanting to add some bird art to our home, so this is perfect.
This was our first time to attend an Audubon meeting, and we’re thinking of becoming members. We were pleasantly surprised to see great attendance, probably 60-80 people. I’m not sure if they always have such a good showing at meetings, but it could have been because tonight’s program was a talk by Bill Rapai, author of the new book “The Kirtland’s Warbler.” I got my copy of the book a couple weeks ago but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. After hearing Bill’s wonderfully enthusiastic and knowledgeable presentation, I’m ready to dive into the amazing story of this endangered bird.
I always love meeting authors, and the fact that Bill is a local author made this even more special. (He’s president of the Grosse Pointe Audubon chapter.) It was fun to meet some new people and see some I already knew. As we all know, I don’t socialize nearly enough these days! So all in all, it was a good day. 😉
